As you prepare for the mowing season I would like to suggest something that can save you money.
Wash out ports are very standard on lawn mower decks anymore but are they the best thing?
Some of the problems are:
1. Washing out immediately after mowing. This is taking cold water and putting on a very hot bearing. This can cause premature bearing failure.
2. Washing out with one port does not usually clean the entire underside of the deck.
3. Washing out then parking your mower leaves all the moisture in the bearing area. This can cause premature bearing failure as well.
4. Washing out the deck can also wash the grease out of your bearings.
What options do you have? Buying a jack to secure your mower and laying down and scraping the deck is the best option. This is where you are able ensure you get things clean and also inspect the mower deck and do preventative maintenance. You will also prevent yourself some potential headaches. I am not saying that washing the deck with the washout is the worst thing you can do but it is my opinion that it is not the best.
If you check out the equipment you are are buying and make sure that the mower deck has good discharge flow you really do not need much more than a good jack and an occasional scraping of the deck.
