Are these cooler temperatures reminding you of the possibility that it may snow this year? Consider the following:
- Snow blowers spend more time in storage than they do being used.
- As a result of this extended storage time, a gummed-up carburetor is one of the most common problems with snow blowers.
- This undisturbed time in the garage or storage shed is a perfect opportunity for critters--rodents love to make nests under the shroud on the unit’s motor. This buildup of material affects the ability of the machine to cool itself. Also, mice and squirrels have a tendency to chew through wiring as well.
Any of those three points are key to your blower functioning properly, and problems in any of those areas may cause a malfunction.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the bolts on the auger need to be shear bolts--not grade 5 bolts. Our technicians have seen more gear boxes ruined because someone just grabbed a bolt and put in the auger, instead of purchasing the proper shear bolt. A shear bolt is made of softer metal, and is designed to be more easily broken. A hardened bolt will not break under a stressful load; this will cause the gears in the gear box to be destroyed. The resulting repair many times will cost a lot more than the blower itself is worth. Please bring your make and model info to one of our conveniently located Dave's Tractor World stores--let us help you with the shear bolts you need for your snow blower.
