When you go over your unit and do your spring tune up it is good to have a check list to follow. The things that are usually done include changing the oil and its filter, changing the spark plug(s), changing the fuel & air filters, and sharpening and balancing the mower blades.
When you sharpen your blades, do you take time to spin the pulleys and feel the bearings for roughness? Finding a rough bearing before it goes out can save a lot of money. When a bearing finally gives out a lot of times it will take the belt with it. Some belts can be very pricey--that is why we take time to check your pulleys and bearings when we have it in the shop. It is not only the mower deck pulleys and bearings that need to be looked over, but also the pulleys in the drive system should be checked for excessive wear and tear.
One more thing about bearings... When you clean your mower deck in the summer after mowing, make sure you wait for at least ten minutes after mowing to allow the bearings to cool before spraying cold water on them. Secondly, make sure to run the mower deck for a few minutes after you wash it to allow the bearings to heat up; this will dissipate any water in and around the bearing in order to prevent premature bearing failure.
